Unfortified flour in the UK: where to buy it
Updated 22 October 2026. Each seller below links to the page where the claim is made.
From 13 December 2026, most non-wholemeal common wheat flour sold in the UK must contain added folic acid, as well as the calcium, iron, niacin and thiamin already required (GOV.UK). Unfortified flour is still legal and still on sale. It comes from three places: wholemeal flour, small exempt mills, and grains other than common wheat such as spelt and rye.
The quick answer
- Want white flour? Buy it from a small mill. The exemption applies to a production site whose annual capacity is no greater than 500 metric tonnes of flour and whose output was below 500 metric tonnes in each of the previous three calendar years (GOV.UK; Real Bread Campaign). The mills listed below sell online.
- Happy with wholemeal? 100% wholemeal wheat flour is exempt from the rules (Bread and Flour Regulations 1998, reg. 4), so you can find it in any supermarket.
- Open to other grains? Spelt, einkorn, emmer, rye and gluten-free flours are not covered at all (GOV.UK: Folic acid; Doves Farm FAQ).
Unfortified white flour: small mills that sell online
White flour is the hardest kind to find unfortified, because big mills must add folic acid. These traditional wind, water and farm mills say, or are described by their stockists as saying, that their flour has no added fortificants. Prior's Flour, for example, says its flour "is now entirely free of additives, including folic acid" (Prior’s Flour, 5 Nov 2025). Listings rated "Medium" rely on a stockist's description, so check the pack or ask the mill before you buy.

Supermarket options: wholemeal and ancient grains
Doves Farm, a brand most UK supermarkets stock, says its wholemeal wheat flours are exempt and will not contain folic acid. It says spelt, einkorn, emmer and rice flours are not covered either. Its plain white, self-raising white and white bread flours, including organic white, will be fortified (Doves Farm FAQ). Being organic does not make white flour unfortified.

Check the label, especially before the end of 2026
- Added folic acid has to appear in the ingredients list, including when fortified flour is used as an ingredient (GOV.UK).
- Mills have until 13 December 2026 to comply. Doves Farm warns that until the end of 2026, products "may or may not yet contain folic acid" while packaging and stock change over (Doves Farm FAQ). Check every bag, not just the brand.
- Prior's Flour notes that some older bags may still list fortificants on the label (Prior’s Flour).
Would you rather buy bread?
Some bakeries bake specific loaves with unfortified flour, and at least one delivers across England and Wales. See the bakeries & mills directory and filter by your region.
This page is for people who have already decided they want unfortified flour. It is not medical advice. The UK government recommends folic acid fortification to reduce neural tube defects (GOV.UK). If you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, speak to a health professional about folic acid. See our disclaimer.
