Does Arla use Bovaer? Cravendale, Lurpak and Anchor
Updated 25 October 2026. Every claim links to its source.
What Arla has said about the Bovaer feed additive on its UK farms, and what that means for its brands.
Short answer
- The project: Arla says that on 26 November 2024 it announced a project using the cow feed supplement Bovaer on UK farms (Arla statement).
- Now: "Our UK projects on methane-reducing supplements have now ended, and the findings are currently being reviewed" (Arla statement). Arla doesn't say whether it will use Bovaer again.
- Labels: Arla says it won't label products from cows fed Bovaer because "we only label products with ingredients that are contained within the product" (Arla statement).
- The FSA's view: Bovaer is approved in Great Britain and "was not found in milk in any of the trials presented to the FSA" (FSA, 5 Dec 2024).
Which brands are Arla's?
- Arla Cravendale, Arla Farmers Milk, Arla BIG Milk, Arla LactoFREE, Arla B.O.B., Arla Skyr and Arla Protein: listed on Arla UK's brands page (Arla UK brands).
- Lurpak: listed under "Other Arla Sites" on arla.com.
- Anchor butter and cream: the UK Anchor site is "Copyright © Arla Foods" (Anchor).
- Arla's statement covers its UK projects as a whole. It doesn't say which farms, brands or products took part, so we can't say whether any one product came from a project farm.
- Yeo Valley is a separate organic brand. Yeo Valley Organic says it "does not allow feed additives for the reduction of methane within our supply chain" (Reuters, 19 Dec 2024), and organic standards don't permit Bovaer (Soil Association).
